In 1998 I started working for my Ph.D. thesis. The original contribution of the thesis presents four types of reactions to be used for kinetic methods. The calibration lines or curves were obtained and analytical features of the proposed methods are described. Each method has been compared with usual analysis methods, or tried to real samples. For two of the studies undertaken, where the kinetic properties were not available, the kinetic point of view prevailed, to get kinetic law, the reaction mechanism and after that kinetic procedures of analysis were suggested.
The simplest kinetic method concerning the conception, the data processing and experimental device is that one based on Landolt system.
It was developed a Bratton-Marshall kinetic method for determination of aromatic amines, based on an azodye formation. The indicator reaction was a coupling process between diazonium salt yielded by the amine and nitrous acid, and 1-phenil-3-methilpirazolin-5-one. Because of quite different rate of coupling between various diazonium salts (different amines) and 1-phenil-3-methilpirazolin-5-one, discrimination of mixture of two amine could be done, based on the logarithmic extrapolation method.
The kinetic method based on enzymatic reactions employed the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide catalyzed by catalase. Para-nitrophenol and hidroxylamine are quite efficient inhibitors for the reaction. The kinetic studies aimed to describe the inhibition mechanism. It was proved that this is a full mixt one for both substances.
In the case of phenol oxidation reaction by permanganate, the attention was focused especially on kinetics and mechanism of the reaction. The complex stoichiometry obtained under high acidity conditions, shows the complete destruction of aromatic ring. The extra-kinetic data (UV-VIS, IR spectra, and the polymerization initiation) proved the implication of several intermediate species, free radicals, and intermediate valence species of manganese. It was established a complex rate law, which describes the oxidation process of phenol. The autocatalytic character of the oxidation has been also demonstrated. Based on kinetic and non-kinetic experimental proofs a reaction mechanism has been suggested. A kinetic method – having the oxidation reaction as the indicator – has been established. It is appropriate for phenol determination in wastewater, containing relative high phenol concentration.
Another research was focus in VOC emission (at Tartu University). I developed a method for determination of n-octanol/water partition coefficients and Henry’s Law constants for monoterpenoids and isoprenoids. In the same field, heat stress resistance of the foliar photosynthetic apparatus was investigated in the Mediterranean monoterpene emitting evergreen sclerophyll species Quercus ilex L (at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona).
My research at Ghent University was focus in development of methods based on ion-exchange ion chromatography (IC) for the determination of a number of C2-C5 diacids and other low-molecular weight organic acids in atmospheric aerosols.
My present work is now focus on synthesis of new organomercury(II) compounds using either direct metallation reactions or metathesis reactions with organolithium reagents, and transfer reactions of the organic groups with pendant arms from mercury to other metals.
