Cristina Albu. Problematics of Postcolonial Dislocation in the Case of the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest. In Jaynie Anderson (ed.), Crossing Cultures: Conflict, Migration and Convergences (32nd Congress of the International Committee of the History of Art), pp. 1071-1076. Melbourne University Press, 2009.

Abstract: The paper is intended to outline a series of paradoxes that characterized the inscription of the National Museum of Contemporary Art of Romania within the west wing of the People’s House, a gigantic edifice reminiscent of the traumatic communist past. It seeks to analyze the circumstances that have occasioned the opposition of several Romanian artists and critics to the project and to underscore the elements of postcolonial dislocation evident at the level of the discourse surrounding the museum foundation.

Keywords: contemporary art in Eastern Europe, museum discourse, postcolonialism
